CORNWALL – The Montreal to Lake Ontario section of the St. Lawrence Seaway will close for the season on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1, 2023).
It’s a day later than originally planned as the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation says ships were dealing with navigation problems due to the recent snowstorms.
The corporation says all ships have to be clear of the waterway by noon on Monday.
The seaway is ending the navigation season with the number of trips up slightly but there’s a slump in cargo.
As of the end of November, there were 3,502 vessel transits, 1.7 per cent more than 2021. The amount of cargo shipped was down 6.8 per cent with only gains seen in dry and liquid bulk shipments.
December numbers and the entire year will come in mid-January 2023.
