Highway 138 safety improvements needed now: warden

SD&G – Less than a week after the Ontario election, the head of the United Counties of SD&G is calling on the transportation minister to address Highway 138.

In an open letter to Caroline Mulroney, Warden Carma Williams says the province has taken “no action to improve the safety of Highway 138” in nearly three years.

Williams adds the county is “extremely disappointed” that Highway 138 was left out of the Draft Transportation Plan for Eastern Ontario and was not considered a “provincial priority.”

The Ministry of Transportation completed a study in 2017 on improvements to the north-south link between Highway 401 and Highway 417 with a number of recommendations.

But other than a couple of carpooling lots on Cornwall Centre Road and north of Monkland, completed in 2019, no other improvements appear to have been made.

Williams says the addition of passing lanes – one of those recommendations – needs to happen right away.

The warden has requested a meeting with Mulroney.
