Murder charge laid in Glengarry woman’s death

SOUTH GLENGARRY – A 25-year-old man from Nova Scotia is facing a charge of first-degree murder in connection to the death of Emilie Maheu.

The 26-year-old woman’s body was found next to a farmer’s field on Concession Road 3 on Saturday morning. She had been reported missing on Thursday night from a County Road 34 home in South Glengarry.

Maheu was last seen leaving her work in Alexandria around 1 p.m. Thursday.

Brandon Smeltzer, 25, of Bayside, N.S. was arrested in New Brunswick and charged with first-degree murder.

He will be transported back to Cornwall to make a court appearance.

Police have not detailed what the connection is between the accused and the victim.

Postmedia, citing a source and Facebook postings, said there had been a relationship between the two, when they both worked for a company in Halifax.
