Charges in welfare fraud case

CORNWALL – Another Cornwallite has been picked up by authorities, accused of swindling the Ontario welfare system.

A woman turned herself into police headquarters Jan. 18 and was charged with fraud over $5,000.

Police say the accused failed to declare changes in her living arrangements to the Ontario Works Resource Center between September 2014 and April 2015.

This resulted in an overpayment of $5,158.

Katherine Scanlon, 35, of Cornwall will appear in court Feb. 17, 2016.

This is the third accused welfare fraudster Cornwall police have charged in the last year.
