Funeral Saturday for Akwesasne snowmobiler

AKWESASNE, Que. – Funeral services will be held this weekend for an Akwesasne snowmobiler, known as a family man and motor sports handyman.

Kirk Ransom, 38, died Feb. 15 when the snowmobile he was riding hit open water around the mouth of the Salmon River at the St. Lawrence River.

Ransom was riding with Brandon Sweeting, 26, who also perished. Funeral arrangements for Sweeting have already taken place.

Ransom was born in Cornwall and went to school at CCVS, excelling in small engine repair.

He also worked with a pit crew at the Mohawk International Raceway.

“Kirk truly loved the precious moments he spent with his family, especially his children and their sports games, barbequing with his friends, or camping on Yellow Island,” reads his obituary in part.

Ransom is survived by his wife, Amanda, three children, his stepson and many relatives.

The family is also extending its “deepest gratitude” to the emergency workers that dedicated their time and energy in the week-long search in the bitter cold.

Visitation starts Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Akwesasne Homemakers until the funeral service on Saturday at 11 a.m.
