Update 10:18 a.m. Monday: Environment Canada has ended the freezing rain warning. However, strong wind gusts up to 70 kilometers an hour are expected today and tonight.
CORNWALL – The City of Cornwall has made a significant weather declaration as the region is being hit with a blanket of freezing rain.
Environment Canada issued an orange freezing rain warning, with up to 20 millimeters (0.78 inches) of freezing rain buildup expected.
The city’s declaration means it won’t be able to meet minimum winter maintenance standards under the Ontario Municipal Act.
“It may take staff longer than usual to bring the roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes back to a state of repair,” the city said in a statement Sunday.
The freezing rain is expected to change over to freezing drizzle or drizzle this morning and then flurries this afternoon.
