CORNWALL – The City of Cornwall has closed its non-essential public facilities early today (Dec. 29) given the weather hitting the region.

The area was hit with freezing rain overnight and high winds are expected later today as a cold front moves through the region.

The rain is expected to change to flurries tonight as the temperature plummets to minus 14 with a wind chill of minus 24 overnight.

The Cornwall Civic Complex, Aquatic Center and Benson Center closed at noon today with regular operations scheduled to resume tomorrow morning.

“This decision was made to help keep everyone safe and to avoid unnecessary travel during hazardous conditions,” the city said in a statement.

The overnight warming center at The Agape Center is also opening early at 7 p.m. instead of 11 p.m. given the weather conditions. It will run until 7 a.m. tomorrow.

The warming center at 40 Fifth Street West is in partnership with the city and provides a place to warm up, refreshments and Wi-Fi with priority given to the homeless who are on the city’s by-name list.
