Email to the Editor: Next NDP leader needs strong command of French language

I recognize that in 2026, New Democrats need to select a bilingual leader. So far, Edmonton MP Heather McPherson, former broadcaster Avi Lewis and union leader Rob Ashton have stepped up to lead New Democrats. All three are excellent candidates.

However, their French is a potential fatal flaw to make a difference in the next federal elections. And ultimately win a sufficient number of seats to matter in Canadian politics.

Quite frankly, the NDP membership should choose a new leader who can embody a voice of both official languages.
