Body found in St. Lawrence River

AKWESASNE – A body has been found in the St. Lawrence River about 25 kilometers east of Cornwall.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service says the body was found around 2 p.m. Monday (July 3) near Ross Island.

The island is downstream from Akwesasne on the Ontario side of the river, almost immediately south of the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area in South Glengarry.

Police are awaiting information from the coroner’s office on a positive identification but are releasing no further details.

In late March, police had been looking for 30-year-old Casey Oakes after eight people – two families of Romanian and Indian descent – died trying to cross the river in a boat.

Oakes was reported missing. Police called off the search in early April after finding Oakes’ boat, some of his clothing, but not him.
