One OPP officer dead, two injured in Bourget shooting

Update 11:08 a.m. Thursday: Story has been updated with identity of officer killed and upcoming OPP news conference.

BOURGET, Ont. – A shooting in the village of Bourget, about an hour drive northwest of Cornwall, has left one OPP officer dead and two more injured.

Ontario Provincial Police say they were called to a home on Laval Street around 2 a.m. today for a report of a gunshot.

When the three officers arrived on the scene, they were fired upon by someone at the home.

The three officers were taken to hospital by paramedics where one died of their injuries. The other two are recovering.

The officer who died has been identified as Sgt. Eric Mueller with the Russell County OPP detachment.

One person has been arrested.

OPP will be holding a news conference at the Ottawa OPP detachment at 1 p.m.

Cornwall Police Service released a statement Thursday saying they are “deeply saddened” to hear about “yet another incident where an officer has been killed in the line of duty.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of the OPP.”
