CORNWALL – The city’s fire department has been granted a court order to have the remaining people in The Care Center removed from the building temporarily.
The Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled Friday (March 31) after hearing the case on Thursday and Friday.
“Her (the judge) reasons focused on the significant safety concerns which were the basis for the fire chief’s decision to take immediate action to vacate the building at the end of last week,” the city said in a statement.
Other than claims by the city the fire panel on the main floor and the third floor are not communicating with each other and the issue with the elevators not working, the corporation has not detailed the “significant safety concerns” that are not meeting the Ontario Fire Code.
The city says it “remains committed to finding safe, alternative accommodation for the small number of individuals remaining in the building” – reportedly to be seven people. The building had around 40 residents.
