CORNWALL – A person has died after a house fire Thursday afternoon.

Cornwall Fire Services responded to the fire on Holy Cross Boulevard, east of Nick Kaneb Drive, around 1 p.m.

The department says their 11 firefighters were met with heavy fire and zero visibility inside the building. It required the department to call in six additional off-duty firefighters, known in the business as a “second alarm.”

“As a result of circumstances related to the incident a fatality has been confirmed,” Deputy Fire Chief Leighton Woods said in a statement Friday.

Woods expressed condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

Relatives have been notified though the identity of the victim will not be released “out of respect for the family.”

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating along with the regional coroner, local police and fire officials.

No cause of the fire has been determined.
