CURRY HILL – Police and the Transportation Safety Board are investigating after a section of Highway 401 near the Ontario-Quebec border was closed overnight after a plane crashed on the highway.
Citizen video from the scene shows pieces of wreckage of what appears to be a small plane in the median right across from the Bainsville ONroute.
The plane also appears to have clipped hydro wires on its descent which were also draped across the freeway.
Just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, SD&G OPP said the crash involved a Cessna 150 and the people in the plane were taken to hospital in critical condition.
Later on Tuesday, OPP said they believe from their initial investigation, the airplane “may have experienced (a) mechanical problem after departing from the Valleyfield, Quebec airport.”
Police also updated the conditions of the victims. They say one was taken by medevaced to hospital with life-threatening injuries while a second person in the plane was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance with non life-threatening injuries.
The Cessna 150 is a two-seat, high wing, single engine plane that has tricycle landing gear. It’s a popular airplane for personal travel and for flight training.
A section of the highway from County Road 23 (Curry Hill Road/4th Line Road) to the Ontario-Quebec border was closed from just before 9 p.m. and reopened around 4:15 a.m., according to 511 Ontario.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center at CFB Trenton is also assisting with the investigation.
