Here are the latest local, regional and national headlines on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) for Thursday, November 25, 2021:
- There have been 613,522 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Ontario, an increase of 591 cases from the previous day (VAX: 293 unvaccinated, 14 partially vaccinated, 237 fully vaccinated, 47 unknown). There have been 598,134 people recovered from the virus while 9,981 have died. The number of Ontario people tested is 19,599,876 of which 15,681 have pending results.
- Canada’s coronavirus case total is 1,774,946. The country has 29,580 deaths from the virus – 12 in the Yukon, 12 in the Northwest Territories, four in Nunavut, 2,313 in British Columbia, 3,231 in Alberta, 914 in Saskatchewan, 1,299 in Manitoba, 9,981 in Ontario, 11,566 in Quebec, 123 in New Brunswick, 18 in Newfoundland & Labrador and 107 in Nova Scotia.
- The Eastern Ontario Health Unit added nine cases Wednesday – two in SD&G and seven in Cornwall – to bring the regional total to 6,009 confirmed cases, of which 82 are active (four more than Tuesday) and 5,796 are resolved (five more than Tuesday). The number of deaths to date is 131. There are two person in hospital and one in the ICU (no change from Tuesday). There are two institutional outbreaks (one more than Tuesday). Testing increased 371 to 172,315. The breakdown of cases is: Prescott-Russell 2,281 cases (six active), SD&G 1,395 cases (25 active), Cornwall 1,820 cases (32 active) and Akwesasne (ON/QC) 513 cases (19 active)(___Akwesasne health department reported no new cases Tuesday: 541 total cases, 27 active, nine deaths to date).
- The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit added four cases Wednesday to bring the regional total to 2,058 confirmed cases, of which 30 are active (eight fewer than Tuesday) and 1,964 are recovered (12 more than Tuesday). The number of deaths to date is 64. There are four people in hospital (one fewer than Tuesday) and one in the ICU (no change from Tuesday). There are no active institutional outbreaks. The community case breakdown is: Lanark County East 446 cases (zero active), Lanark County West 470 cases (11 active), Leeds-Grenville Central 256 cases (five active), Leeds-Grenville East 413 cases (four active), Leeds-Grenville West 239 cases (10 active) and Unknown/Out of Region 27 cases (zero active).
- Vaccines: Ontario 22,833,157 (+12,706, last update Nov. 24); EOHU 336,617 (last update Nov. 24, +911 from previous update Nov. 23); LGL 151,636 individuals living in LGL with first doses, 147,919 with second doses, 5,393 with third doses. (last update Nov. 23, +307 first doses, +606 second doses, +1,411 third doses since previous update Nov. 16).
- More generous wages and rent subsidies are coming for Canadian businesses from the Trudeau government. A new pandemic aid bill will also provide income support to workers of $300 per week, retroactive to Oct. 24, who are off the job due to a public health order. The legislation is not yet passed.
- Quebec’s campaign to vaccinate children aged five to 11 started Wednesday morning at mass vaccination centers. It will also be expanded to a school-based rollout. Saskatchewan was also expected to start putting shots in little arms yesterday.
- The U.S. government is expecting non-resident essential workers crossing at land borders and by ferry, like truck drivers and first responders, to be fully vaccinated by late January. The expected policy from the Biden administration would bring the rules into line with the rules for non-essential travellers that started this month.
- The World Health Organization says COVID-19 cases jumped 11 per cent in Europe in the past week and is again the epicenter of the pandemic. A WHO director is warning there could be another 700,000 deaths by spring if something isn’t done as far as restrictions and other measures.
