Name change referendum for Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe

AKWESASNE, N.Y. – The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council will hold the second of three public meetings later this month on changing its name.

The proposed name change up for a vote is “Akwesasne Mohawk Tribe.”

The second public meeting is happening Oct. 14 where a historic preservation director will present details on the history of the name “Akwesasne.” A third meeting is set for Oct. 28.

The tribal referendum vote is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14 at the administration building on Margaret Terrance Memorial Way in Akwesasne, N.Y.

Advance, absentee and in-home voting options are also going to be available ahead of voting day.
