CORNWALL – A couple in their 20s has been charged with child abandonment after a police investigation on Fourth Street West.

Cornwall police were called yesterday morning (May 19) about the well-being of two young children at a home near Fourth Street West and Bedford Street.

An eyewitness told Cornwall Newswatch that police were on the scene all day and then another police team, geared up in white suits, were at the property taking pictures.

A 22-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were arrested and each charged with abandoning a child.

They were later released with a promise to appear in court Aug. 25.

Their names were not released in order to protect the identity of the children.

Police have not said whether the children are still with their parents or with the Children’s Aid Society.

Spokesman Stephanie MacRae told Newswatch that CPS works with several agencies in relation to child welfare and safety and “have a duty to report cases of this nature to the Children’s Aid Society.”

The children did not require medical treatment, MacRae added.
