ROSEDALE TERRACE – A house fire has resulted in tragedy in the South Stormont neighbourhood, north of Cornwall.

South Stormont Fire Chief Gilles Crepeau tells Cornwall Newswatch that one person has lost their life tonight (Wednesday) in a fire in the Rosedale Terrace subdivision.

The fire happened in a single-storey home near the intersection of Sunnyview Avenue and Virginia Street just before 6 p.m.. Approximately two dozen firefighters from the Long Sault and St. Andrews West stations were on scene.

“I can confirm that there was a fire death in the structure,” Crepeau said.

The victim’s identity has not been made public though Crepeau said relatives have been notified.

SD&G O.P.P. later said the victim is a 65-year-old woman.

The fire chief was not able to say much more as the investigation has been turned over to the Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM). Investigators are travelling from Toronto and are expected to be on scene later tonight (Wednesday).

“They’ll do a preliminary investigation and we’ll find out exactly the cause of the fire after the investigation is complete,” he said.

SD&G O.P.P. are holding the scene overnight. At least two units from Cornwall-SDG Paramedic Services were also on scene tonight.
