Former Cornwall Aces player named head coach of SLU

CANTON, N.Y. – A former player with the Cornwall Aces and assistant coach at Clarkson University in Potsdam has been named head coach of the St. Lawrence University (SLU) men’s hockey team.

Brent Brekke was named last week to lead the Canton team and was to being introduced during SLU’s reunion weekend, according to the Watertown Daily Times.

Brekke, 47, will be taking over coaching duties for the Saints, who finished last season in the ECAC (NCAA Division I) at the bottom at 6-29-2.

The team fired its last coach in March with two years left on his contract and had thought it found another coach last month before the potential new hire turned down the position, the paper said.

Brekke was a defenceman and drafted in the ninth round by the Quebec Nordiques in 1991. He played for the Cornwall Aces from 1994-95 and one game in the following season.
