CORNWALL/AKWESASNE – A Cornwall company has been awarded the contract to make improvements to the road linking both spans of the Seaway International Bridge.

Cornwall Gravel won the fifth bridge contract, the Federal Bridge Corporation announced today (April 26).

The Cornwall company’s bid of $2.8 million (plus applicable sales tax) beat out two other bidders.

It’s the one of the final pieces of the $85 million federal government project to replace the high-level North Channel Bridge with a smaller low-level bridge.

The work will include adding drainage to Akwesasne International Road, turning lanes for local businesses, an additional local service road, lighting and a set of traffic lights at Island Road.

Preliminary site work has started and the bulk of construction is expected to begin the middle of next month and be completed by the end of November.

The Federal Bridge Corporation still has put out a tender for work to remove the three in-water piers between the City of Cornwall and Cornwall Island.
