CRTF seizes $105K in tobacco

SOUTH GLENGARRY – Police have seized just over a ton of tobacco during a Cornwall Regional Task Force operation, east of Cornwall.

The seizure was made Monday last week (Aug. 21) during CRTF surveillance on the St. Lawrence River in South Glengarry but officials only released details to the media today (Tuesday).

Officers confiscated 65 bags of unstamped fine cut tobacco, which weighed in at 1,172 kilograms (2,583 pounds) after stopped a van leaving the shoreline.

Police estimate the tobacco is worth just over $105,000.

Two men in their 20s from Quebec are facing Excise Act and Tobacco Tax Act charges and will make a court appearance in Cornwall in October.
