Verdict in former priest’s sexual assault trial expected in September

CORNWALL – A verdict in the trial of a former Roman Catholic priest from Quebec is expected in about two months.

The Crown and defence wrapped up the trial Thursday with their final submissions.

A three day trial was held last month.

At issue is whether a 2015 encounter between Denis Vaillancourt and a man in his 20s at the victim’s family cottage in South Glengarry reached the threshold of being deemed a sexual assault.

Noted defence lawyer Don Johnson is representing Vaillancourt while Elaine Evans is prosecuting the case.

Vaillancourt, who is in his 70s, was a priest with the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall.

The verdict is expected Sept. 14.
