CORNWALL – Local Mounties will be stepping up border patrols over the next two days in what is being called a “surge operation.”
The Cornwall RCMP is partnering with 15 Canadian and American law enforcement agencies to make sure the border is secure.
It will include high visibility patrols and door-to-door visits with people who live along the St. Lawrence River today (Jun 8) and tomorrow.
“The goal of this surge operation is to provide insight to residents on the importance of border security, to seek their input and to answer any questions they may have,” the force said.
Because of its geographic makeup, the Cornwall area has been somewhat of a smuggler’s paradise with various ways to elude authorities while getting across the border.
There have also been a number of recent cases of human smuggling in the area.
