Breach charges dropped against Afghan war vet

MORRISBURG – Breach charges against Afghanistan war veteran Collin Fitzgerald have been dropped.

A check of court records by Cornwall Newswatch shows the three breach charges were withdrawn by the Crown during a court appearance here Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

Fitzgerald was arrested at his Iroquois home on July 31, 2014 after his former home burned down.

At the time, he was under conditions to remain at his parents’ Morrisburg home and not to have contact with his ex-wife.

The fire was believed to have been arson. While Fitzgerald was never charged in association with the crime he was charged for allegedly breaking bail conditions.

The charges were dropped last week because the Crown had evidence showing the former solider had been on a cell phone at his parents’ home at the time of the fire, according to CBC News.

Fitzgerald is still facing a motor vehicle theft charge and the matter will be spoken to in Morrisburg court July 5, 2016.

The award recipient of the Medal of Military Valour has been very forthright about his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder following his tour of duty.
