South Glengarry man to be sentenced in cyclist’s death

CORNWALL – A South Glengarry man will be sentenced in April for his role in the death of a cyclist in 2014.

Denis Piette entered a guilty plea Tuesday in the Municipal Provincial Offences Court on Pitt Street. The case has been adjourned until April.

Piette had been charged Feb. 14, 2015 with careless driving after cyclist Francisco Teruel, 62, of South Glengarry died.

Teruel was struck from behind by a car on County Road 25 on Sept. 25, 2014.

Piette will be sentenced April 5, 2016 at 1:30 p.m.

Careless driving is a Highway Traffic Act of Ontario (non-criminal) charge. A conviction comes with a minimum fine of $400 and a maximum fine of $2,000. The court can also suspend your driver’s licence up to two years and impose a jail sentence up to six months.
