Damphousse named bishop in Sault Ste. Marie

CORNWALL – The bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall is leaving to become a leader for Catholics in Northeastern Ontario.

Marcel Damphousse, 52, has been named the new bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.

Pope Francis announced the new appointment today (Thursday), according to the Sault Ste. Marie Star.

Damphousse, a Manitoba native, has been the bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall since June 2012.

The Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall said he will be taking his new position within the next two months with an inauguration in Sault Ste. Marie scheduled for January 13, 2016.

It will be up to the Vatican to name a successor, which has not happened to date.

The Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall has 56,000 Catholics, 27 parishes and 33 priests.
