BROCKVILLE – The Upper Canada District School Board announced Monday it has appointed Stephen Sliwa as its CEO and Director of Education.

Sliwa has spent three decades in the public education system, two-thirds of that in the Upper Ottawa Valley.

He also has a background in special education, Native studies and history and has worked at the provincial level on education planning.

Sliwa officially starts his new job Nov. 23, taking over for Acting Director of Education Charlotte Patterson.

Patterson filled in after David Thomas abruptly retired in October 2014 after a 35 year career with the UCDSB.

At that time, UCDSB board chairman Greg Pietersma had indicated that Thomas had “taken UCDSB as far as he can and he recognizes it is time for new staff leadership.”
