CORNWALL – Two people had to be treated at hospital for smoke inhalation after a rapidly moving fire through a city duplex.
Cornwall firefighters were called to the building in the 1300 block of Second Street East around 7 p.m. Monday night after emergency dispatchers received a 911 call.
The fire was already “rapidly progressing” by the time they arrived, but the 14 firefighters were able to get the flames under control and put it out.
There were also five fire vehicles from both stations on scene.
Investigators say the fire was contained to one unit on the west side of the building but the adjoining unit has heavy smoke damage.
Nine residents have been displaced, fire officials said.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
