AKWESASNE – The source of a salmonella outbreak that sickened a handful of people and had several other under watch will likely never been known.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Department of Health officially declared the outbreak over Thursday (July 30) and closed its investigation.
There were a total of five confirmed cases and one preliminary positive case.
Health officials traced the onset of the food poisoning back to July 12.
While officials believed the source was a community event, they couldn’t conclusively link the outbreak to the function.
“Unofficially, Community Health was not able to test the food from any even so they would not be able to say for certain if it was the source,” Mohawk Council of Akwesasne spokeswoman Shannon Roundpoint said in an email to Cornwall Newswatch.
