Over 100 cows perish in five-alarm fire

SOUTH GLENGARRY – A South Glengarry dairy operation has been dealt a devastating blow after a fire Saturday night.

The blaze on County Road 18, west of Brown House, saw roughly 55 firefighters respond from all five stations in the township around 9 p.m.

There were no injuries, however, over 100 dairy cows died in the heavy smoke and fire at the Sturkenboom farm, about one kilometer east of St. Raphael’s.

The barn, reportedly a three family operation, was a total loss.

Firefighters were on the scene for 13 hours.

South Glengarry Fire Chief Vic Leroux says the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified of the incident.

Damage is pegged at nearly $1 million.
