Deadly house fire in St. Regis

AKWESASNE, Que. – A person has died in a house fire in St. Regis on the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory.

Akwesasne Mohawk police and Hogansburg-Akwesasne firefighters were called to a home on Andrew Johnson Road, between First and Second Streets, shortly after midnight this morning (Tuesday).

Firefighters found smoke billowing from an upper floor when they arrived and were able to contain the blaze.

They found a person, believed to be the homeowner, dead inside the structure.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this point, though a Quebec Provincial Police identification and arson investigator is assisting with the investigation.

A portion of Andrew Johnson Road from First Street to Second Street is still closed as of late Tuesday afternoon in order for investigators to do their work.
