GREEN VALLEY — Giant plumes of black smoke could be seen as far away as Lancaster after a garage fire near Green Valley.

The fire started around 3 p.m. in the building at 4448 County Road 34 on the west side of the highway, just north of Concession Road 7.

One neighbour tells Cornwall Newswatch the garage had restored antique cars inside and also a camper trailer.

“I’m just worried about my neighbour,” one woman said. It appeared the homeowners were unhurt as a woman could be seen rushing schoolchildren into the house and a man came out of the house to retrieve mail from the mailbox.

Neighbours say the garage is owned by Lincoln Cumberbatch. “It was his livelihood (restoring classic automobiles),” the woman said.

Firefighters from Lancaster, North Lancaster, Martintown, Williamstown and Glen Walter have been battling the stubborn, smoky fire and were still working as of 6 p.m.

Around 5:15 p.m. a hi-hoe was brought in to tear down the garage and allow firefighters better access to the flames and hot spots.

Traffic is being detoured off County Road 34 at Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 8.
