Man flees Cornwall police to island

CORNWALL – A man from Hogansburg, New York is facing a number of charges after fleeing police at the toll booth in Cornwall.

City police say an officer had stopped a motorist near the north channel bridge early Sunday morning and found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol behind the wheel.

But the driver took off, striking the officer’s arm off the car’s door pillar and then smashed through a toll booth gate as he fled to Cornwall Island.

He was picked up by Akwesasne Mohawk Police and brought back to Cornwall.

The suspect, 20, is facing drunk driving charges, over 80, fleeing police, dangerous driving, assaulting a police officer and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He was held for a bail hearing in Cornwall.
