CORNWALL – The new St. Lawrence genealogy and historical archives center opens Thursday at the Cornwall Public Library.
Since it began in 1986 in the Nativity Church basement, the Généalogie et archives Saint-Laurent has been operating on fundraising and memberships.
With its expanding collection, the organization signed a lease agreement with the Cornwall Public Library this spring to allow it to house over 15,000 documents and other material in the library basement.
The material will be stored in one area of the basement as the space will have to undergo renovations in the future, which could cost roughly $280,000.
The group has been trying to get a government grant to defray some of the cost.
Other historical resources will be stored in the Cornwall room and on the main floor of the library and in the reference section.
The official opening with guided tours happens from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday with a presentation on the computer software used for genealogy at 2 p.m.
