CORNWALL, Ont. – A home improvement program to help lower-income homeowners in Cornwall and SD&G make upgrades to their house will be taking applications starting next week.
The Ontario Renovates program gives forgivable loans under its Urgent Home Repair section. Those loans are up to $16,000 over a maximum of 10 years in order to upgrade things like heating, foundations and roofs. Grants up to $5,000 are also available for making changes to make a home more accessible such as handrails.
In order to qualify, your gross household income has to be less than $45,000 and your home can’t be worth more than $160,000. Your property taxes, insurance and mortgage also have to be in good standing.
The city says the program has been very popular. Two-hundred-fifty homeowners have received help through Ontario Renovates since the program began.
Application forms will be on the city’s website starting Monday and at the Social Housing Office on the third floor at 340 Pitt Street. The deadline to make an application is Oct. 17.
