SIU investigating driver’s death near Long Sault

LONG SAULT – The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a driver who fled a RIDE spot check died shortly after his arrest.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit says the SD&G OPP was conducting the impaired driving program on the Highway 401 westbound off ramp at Moulinette Road just after noon Friday.

That’s when the driver took off.

His vehicle was found in a nearby cornfield a short time later where officers arrested him.

During his arrest, the SIU says the man “went into medical distress and officers provided CPR. Officers called EMS. Paramedics arrived and took over medical care.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SIU has assigned four investigators to the case and will look into the actions of three officers in the moments before the man’s death. There are two witnesses.

An autopsy will take place Tuesday to determine the 66-year-old’s cause of death.
