CORNWALL – A Quebec man is facing charges of smuggling cannabis across the St. Lawrence River to the Summerstown area.

The RCMP-led Cornwall Regional Task Force says it seized 6.8 kilograms (15 pounds) of unstamped cannabis, $1,070 in cash and a 2011 Chevrolet Impala.

It happened after officers saw a “suspicious boat” dock in the Summerstown area where a duffel bag was transferred from the boat to a waiting car. That’s when officers moved in and arrested the driver. They found the bag full of “unstamped cannabis.”

A man from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Que. was arrested and is facing Excise Act and Cannabis Act charges.

The bust happened in mid-December 2021 but CRTF officials only released details of the operation last week – two weeks after the accused made his first court appearance.

The Cornwall Regional Task Force is made up of officers from RCMP, OPP, CBSA and the Ontario Ministry of Finance.
