WINCHESTER – A crash at an intersection near Winchester has killed a motorcycle rider.

SD&G O.P.P. say the collision happened around 5 p.m. today (Friday) on County Road 31 at County Road 43.

“Initial Investigation has indicated…a southbound SUV entered the northbound lane and struck a motorcycle. The investigation continues to determine the cause of the collision,” police said.

The man riding the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man driving the SUV was taken to hospital by paramedics with non-life threatening injuries.

A section of County Road 31 is closed for a police investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Closures are also in place at the north junction of County Road 31 and 43, County Road 43 at Belanger Road, County Road 31 and Baker Road and County Road 38 and Pemberton Road.

Detours are in place.

This is the third motorcycle rider to die recently on Cornwall and SD&G roads.

In late April, the Ontario Provincial Police noted an increase in motorcycle-related deaths this year. The leading factors in deaths were excessive speed and failing to yield right-of-way.

It says last year was one of the worst riding seasons in more than a decade with 42 deaths on O.P.P. patrolled roads. There were 27 deaths in 2019.
