CORNWALL – City police officers involved in chases reached a three year high in 2020.
Statistics reviewed by the Cornwall Police Services Board Thursday morning show there were 18 pursuits in 2020, compared to 11 in 2019 and 13 in 2018.
The suspect apprehension report also notes that all of those 18 chases followed police policy. All but two were called off for public safety.
Of those 18 pursuits, six people were arrested, compared to two in 2019. There were a total of 38 charges laid, compared to 11 charges in 2019 and 56 in 2018.
There were no injuries in pursuits during 2020 – the same as in 2019.
The report concludes that “although pursuits still occur, officers of the CPS have become accustomed to the policy governing pursuits and are showing due diligence in complying with policy.”
The training sergeant is not recommending any changes within the force.
