CORNWALL – A driver was taken to hospital Thursday afternoon after a collision between a vehicle and a Via Rail passenger train at a level crossing.

The crash happened at the Power Dam Drive crossing, south of Cornwall Centre Road, just before 3 p.m. The crossing is signalled and has gates.

City police, firefighters and paramedics were on scene.

The driver was taken to Cornwall Community Hospital by paramedics. Their condition is not known though Via Rail says it was a “non-fatal incident.”

Via Rail Canada spokesman Philippe Cannon tells Cornwall Newswatch, train 67 was heading from Montreal to Toronto and had 59 passengers on board.

“No passengers or employees were injured during the incident. There is no significant damage to the locomotive,” Cannon said.

The train resumed its trip around 5:45 p.m., he said.
