Stranger tries to lure child from Benson Center: police

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File)

CORNWALL – City police are reminding parents to street-proof their kids after a stranger tried to lure a child away from the Benson Center.

Police say it happened three weeks ago (Thursday, Oct. 8) in the late afternoon when a man in a rusty Volkswagen told a boy outside the Seventh Street West arena he was there to pick him up.

Somebody watching what was going on stepped in and the men left.

Investigators believe it’s an isolated case but are looking for the man anyway.

The suspect is described as white, about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9 inches tall, with a thin build and a small grey beard.

The car was an older-model silver four door sedan with rusty front and rear quarter panels and rust on the bottom of the vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Const. Michel Riel at 613-933-5000 extension 2775.
