CORNWALL – In keeping with recommendations from the Eastern Ontario Health Unit to keep gatherings under 250 people, the Alexandria-Cornwall Catholic Diocese has cancelled all weekend masses.

In a statement on Saturday, Bishop Terrence Prendergast said they took the “unprecedented step” of stopping the religious ceremonies at 26 Catholic churches in the counties of Stormont and Glengarry.

“Realizing that a number of parishes will have difficulty in keeping Mass attendance below 250 this weekend, the bishop has regrettably decided to ask our Catholic parishes to cancel all public Lord’s Day masses,” the diocese said.

The action doesn’t affect daily masses.

The diocese plans to make decisions on weekend masses, one weekend at a time, after consulting with health officials.
