CORNWALL – A charity auction and dinner for the Children’s Treatment Center has set a new record.
Hundreds of people attended the Best Western Saturday night for the Charity Auction and Dinner, which raised $82,855 for the center that treats children suffering from physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
Master of Ceremonies and Honourary Chairman Sean Adams told Cornwall Newswatch the community still came out despite a snowstorm hitting the region.
“When you seen how loyal these supporters are. They come out in those blizzard conditions. Our previous record was $72,000. We raised almost $83,000 tonight through the generosity of each and every one of our supporters. You got to go home with a smile on your face,” Adams said.
There were nearly 50 silent auction items and close to 70 live auction items, including autographed hockey jerseys, weekend getaways, furniture and memorabilia.
Four cakes donated by local baking phenom Judy Stewart hit new heights in the bidding war. A dark chocolate butter cream caramel cake fetched $1,500 – surpassing the previous record for a single cake at $1,350.
A last minute unique addition to the list of auction items was a bronzed and lacquered set of nuts and bolts from the former high level north channel Seaway International Bridge. Local plastic surgeon Dr. Mario Jarmuske was the successful bidder at $750.
A draw for travel tickets donated by Air Canada from Donna Flanigan’s Travel by TPI raised another $5,000 for the CTC. Linda McDonald of Martintown won the draw.
