CORNWALL – A man has been arrested after a four hour standoff with police late Monday night.

The Cornwall Police Service says they were dealing with a man, barricaded in a home, near Edward Street and Lennox Street around 10 p.m.

Police say their officers as well as members of the Cornwall Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators were on scene to assist because there were concerns for the man’s safety and well-being.

Paramedics and firefighters were also there as a precaution.

Just before 2 a.m. Tuesday, the man was “safely apprehended into police custody.”

CPS spokesman Stephanie MacRae told Cornwall Newswatch Tuesday afternoon that the man was transported to hospital for treatment and has not been charged at this point in time.

“In circumstances such as this, our priority is ensuring the man receives the appropriate medical treatment,” she said.

A criminal investigation is ongoing, MacRae added.
