CORNWALL – A seven week trial has been scheduled for a little over a year from now for a Nova Scotia man accused of killing his former girlfriend and leaving her body near Lancaster.

Brandon Smeltzer, 26, of Bayside, N.S. is charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Emilie Maheu.

Her body was found Oct. 13, 2018 next to a farmer’s field on Concession Road 3 after she was reported missing after leaving work in Alexandria two days prior.

A trial by judge has been scheduled for late March 2021 through the first week of May 2021.

Before then, a judicial pretrial will be held in April and then three pretrial motions are scheduled to be heard in February 2021 before the trial is supposed to begin, court records show.

A conviction on a first-degree murder charge carries an automatic life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
