AKWESASNE – The runner up in the last by-election for Akwesasne district chief representing Cornwall Island has been elected to the position.
Unofficial results show Vanessa Lee Adams won in the Saturday (June 1, 2019) by-election at the Tri-District Elders Lodge.
Adams got 103 votes while Lloyd Benedict Jr., who ran in last Akwesasne general election for grand chief, received 5 votes.
Adams takes the position left vacant after Dennis Chaussi resigned in March.
Chaussi, who had been ousted through a community petition, won a by-election in December by five votes over Vanessa Lee Adams.
The results can be appealed up until Thursday (June 6).
