Via Rail to allow small pets

CORNWALL – People taking the train from Cornwall will now be allowed to bring small pets on board – for a fee.

The Crown corporation announced the change today (Aug. 29) to its pet transportation policy. It will allow small dogs and cats in carriers on trains along the Quebec City-Windsor corridor.

Bringing fido or a feline aboard will come with a cost – $50 each direction on top of your regular Via Rail fare. There’s a limit of one pet per passenger. Train car limits also apply – two pets in economy and one pet in business class.

“For many travellers, pets play an important role in their lives, bringing them comfort and presence – just like family. We understand that being away from your pet can be difficult,” Via Rail President Yves Desjardins-Siciliano said.

The rail company will be monitoring the new policy to make sure there’s “peaceful cohabitation” between people toting pets and other passengers.

The policy does not apply to certified guide dogs and service dogs, which are already allowed on board.
