LANCASTER – South Glengarry council will endorse a request for the municipality to be a test area for self-driving cars.

Council is going to approve a request from the Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) Municipal Alliance for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles in Ontario.

OGRA wants to develop a seamless preferred route “from Windsor to Ottawa” for self-driving cars.

Mayor Ian McLeod believed the county has been approached about it but OGRA could run into problems in this area, he said, during a discussion at Monday night’s council meeting.

“You also have to have strong cellular systems in the area and everybody knows the gaps that are out there,” McLeod said.

The resolution, which will go to OGRA, will be passed at the next council meeting (June 18).

South Glengarry is also asking for an update from the county on the proposal from Transportation Director Ben de Haan.
