AKWESASNE – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will share more information Saturday on a potential $45 million land settlement with the Canadian government.
The settlement is for land expropriated along the shore of Cornwall Island for construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s
“The settlement offer also includes the return of lands, including certain lands along the bridge corridor,” the band said in a statement Thursday.
The agreement is being finalized between the MCA and the Government of Canada and will be presented to community members through a referendum.
Akwesasne had a similar agreement with Ontario Power Generation in 2008 for $46 million for damage caused by the construction of the hydro dam.
The public meeting, open to all MCA members, is being held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Tsi Snaihne Recreation Center.
