Another college student demonstration Wednesday

CORNWALL – Students at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall are planning another demonstration – this time outside MPP Jim McDonell’s office.

The student solidarity rally is running in conjunction with the College Student Alliance rally that is happening at Queen’s Park.

The demonstration at the MPP’s office at 120 Second Street West at 1 p.m. Wednesday is meant to be impartial and is not supporting either side, according to an email from organizer Joanne Lauzon.

“The more we make our voices heard the better chance we have at reaching our mutual goal of returning to class! There is strength in numbers!” Lauzon wrote.

Students marched outside the Cornwall campus last week.

The strike by faculty at Ontario’s 24 community colleges, including St. Lawrence, is into its third week.

While no talks are scheduled, St. Lawrence College President Glenn Vollebregt said he was “hopeful that talks will resume sooner rather than later,” in a post Monday to the SLC strike update web page.

“When the (provincially-appointed) mediator is of the view that one or both parties are ready to alter their position, bargaining will resume,” Vollebregt said.

The president is visiting the Brockville and Cornwall campuses today.
