AVONMORE – There was a dramatic scene on Avonmore Road Friday afternoon after a car fire brought traffic to a crawl.

Emergency services were called to the highway around 5:15 p.m. near 8041 Avonmore Road.

Giant plumes of smoke could be seen for several kilometers from the fire site as firefighters from South Stormont beat back the flames.

Traffic was temporarily halted on the county road but northbound traffic was later able to get through but it was moving slowly.

A United Counties road crew was called in to help with cleaning up the road.

No additional information, such as any injuries or what type of car caught fire, were immediately available.
